Jakarta’s Flona exhibition 2011, rich of orchids

Pameran_anggrek_di_Flona_2011I went on the exhibition on the 16th July to see the Indonesian’s orchid supply. People told me this exhibition is one of the most important one in Indonesia but also south east Asia because lots of foreigners come to visit this place. When I got there, I was really surprised of the organization. Indeed, I was expected a close area like we can find in France (exhibitions usually take place in big buildings…), but in fact it was an outdoor exhibition which is much more pleasant. Participants bring their own materials to build their stand without forgetting the essential shade house to protect the orchids from the sun.

After visiting several stands, I noticed that lots of orchid’s sellers are specialized in Phalaenopsis and only a few of them sold Vanda in small quantities. Because of unexpected event, Moon’s orchid was unable to participate to the exhibition this year, and its presence was definitely missing the exhibition…

However, when I visiting John’s farm stand, it was a nice surprise to see the diversity of selling orchids. There was Dendrobium, Oncidium, Cattleya, Phalaenopsis, Vanda and lots of other species. The place was good looking and Pak John really nice. He can give good advice about the way of conserving orchids, which one is the best for your house etc. Moreover, it is not a problem for him if we want to take pictures, we can take as much as we want! It was amazing how he organized its place: he designed it to look like a forest. It was so well done that we couldn’t see anymore the shelves, it was green from floor to ceiling and full of orchids. Indeed, one difference with the others is that there are much more orchids exposed to public, and all of them were blooming. So, because it was like a very rich forest, after every corner we could find another orchid, totally different from the others. He also put a fountain on the way to produce a zen atmosphere. Thus, it’s a real display stand where people could enjoy it even without buying any orchids.

Going on my visit, I fund something which disappointed me. This orchid exhibition was actually also selling wild fauna and pets. First, I thought this is not the place to sell animals, but then I was really shocked with the fact that people sold monkeys, chameleons, lizards, turtles… Most of them are endangered species and it is forbidden to sell them. These animals are better in their natural habitats than in cage and even if it can look good to have these animals at home, we must know that it destroys their population.

There was also a stand to promote Thousand islands tourism. I didn’t hear about this place before, but I felt like going there. The brochures gave information about the biodiversity on the island, especially birds, but also the water activities and the white sand beach… I was then eager to visit this place!

The exhibition was also the occasion for me to try new food, I try Kerak telor and find it really good. I asked not to put too much spices and so it was a new experience! It was the first time I ate duck egg but I couldn’t really make the difference with the chicken ones…I also tried new fruits and dodol durian. I usually love caramel so of course I like dodol!

Finally, except the animal part, this exhibition was really good; I saw that they are a lot of orchid businesses in Indonesia. The flowers were good, and the choice was wide except for Vanda. There were also some people who sold some garden furniture, stone or wood tables, fountains…All was here to get a beautiful garden!
